Kodansha started out as a magazine publisher and has long been one of the leaders in the Japanese market. Our magazine brands cover all segments of the audience--general interest, men, women, young adults and children. The circulation figures tell the story:
Shukan Gendai, one of the leading weekly news magazines in Japan, sells over 630,000 copies a week;
with, the style bible for women in their 20s, over 550,000; and even our brands targeted at children under six can ship as many as 200,000 copies. At present, Kodansha publishes a total of 49 magazines.
Of course, breadth is an important component of our strength. That's why we also put out literary magazines like the prestigious
Gunzo, with more than sixty years of history behind it; news magazines of international scope like
COURRiER Japon, which includes a proportion of articles licensed from the original French edition; and hobby magazines like
Disney FAN, aimed at Japan's burgeoning population of Disney enthusiasts.
